Steve is Professor of Health and Organizational Psychology at Nottingham Business School. His research is around social remembering within ‘vulnerable’ communities, with a particular focus on the lived experience of inpatient mental health care. He is author of over 150 articles and books, including Vital Memory & Affect: Living with a difficult past (2015, Routledge, with Paula Reavey) and The Social Psychology of Experience: Studies in remembering and forgetting (2005, Sage, with David Midddleton). Since 2018, he has acted as co-editor of Memory Studies, having been involved with the journal since its foundation in 2008. He is a trustee and director of Design in Mental Health Network, UK (which promotes user-centred design within inpatient care) and The Sociological Review Foundation (which advocates for public sociology). He is currently part-seconded as a core group member of the Leverhulme funded Centre for the Sciences of Place and Memory at University of Stirling and an External Lecturer in the Department of Business, Humanities and Law at Copenhagen Business School.
